wanderscot
interactive digital guide
project OVERVIEW
WanderScot was an interactive digital travel guide created for my Design Principles in Composition module at Robert Gordon University.
The guide was designed for families travelling to Scotland, with a focus on clear visual composition, readable typography, engaging interactions, and playful audio features. The aim was to create a digital experience that felt useful, accessible, and enjoyable for both adults and younger users.

the design challenge
the problem
Families travelling to Scotland may need information that is easy to understand, visually engaging, and simple to explore. Traditional travel content can sometimes feel text-heavy or overwhelming, especially when planning with children.
the aim
The aim of WanderScot was to create an interactive digital guide that helped families explore Scotland through clear layouts, readable typography, playful interactions, and useful travel information.
the design question
How might I design an interactive travel guide that helps families discover Scotland in a way that feels clear, engaging, and enjoyable to use?
design process
-
I chose families travelling to Scotland as the target users for WanderScot. This influenced the tone, layout, content, and interactive features, as the guide needed to feel clear, friendly, and easy to use for a range of ages.
-
I selected typography that was easy to read and used clear hierarchy throughout the guide. This helped make the information easier to scan, especially for families who may be looking for quick travel ideas, activities, or practical information.
-
As the project was for a Design Principles in Composition module, I focused on creating balanced layouts with clear spacing, strong visual hierarchy, and consistent page structures. This helped the guide feel organised, engaging, and easy to follow.
-
I added interactive elements such as hover states, clickable buttons, carousels, and reveal cards. These allowed users to explore the guide in a more engaging way, while helping keep information organised and less overwhelming.
-
I included audio features such as click sounds, hover sounds for quiz answers, and a playable bagpipe sound. These small details added personality to the guide and helped make the experience feel more playful and connected to the Scottish theme.
-
I planned the guide content around what families may need when travelling to Scotland, including accommodation, transport, hidden gems, activities, and practical travel information. This helped keep the guide useful and easy to navigate, while making sure each section had a clear purpose.

outcome & reflection
WanderScot helped me develop my skills in interactive design, content planning, visual layout, and digital storytelling. The project gave me the opportunity to think about how information can be organised in a way that feels both useful and engaging for users.
It also allowed me to combine my interest in Scotland, travel and visual design into a digital experience with a clear purpose. If I developed WanderScot further, I would explore turning it into a responsive website or mobile app, with interactive maps, saved trip plans and personalised route suggestions.
